Sherrie Bantell: the making of a Valentine, photographically

This Valentine's Day Beauty
used the concept of a girl whose heart was being sought after by many men.

Placing the admirers below the girl in a separate image and using their silhouettes added drama but also a great deal of complexity; everything in both images had to be positioned so they'd fit.

This was the image with Sherrie,
 printed through a heart-shaped mask ...

... and this is the sketched-over work print of the men who were ad salesmen and were pretty accessible as models because I worked in the basement just below the ad department. It shows the silhouettes of Dave Lehman, left, and Jim Hedges, right, and someone in the middle I can't identify, but I think it is Don Hoy.

The final print, using the sandwiched negatives, is shown in the newspaper clipping.

Events that led to the beginning of the Beauty of the Week series started with Sherrie when I photographed her during a fashion show.

Sherrie never knew, I don't think, that she could have been considered the inspriation for all Beauties.

You can read that story in the introduction to this gallery.
