About this gallery
Walter White made his place in history and then lost it. Perhaps this
modest Newark Tea Party boost will begin the process of propelling him
back to fame, at least in his own hometown of Newark Ohio. His story, albeit greatly abbreviated, was uncovered a few weeks ago from among the clippings I saved from the early 60's and I presented it here as a Tea Party feature without much fanfare or pride. But because it was so presented, I received a communication from a photographic historian that alerted me to the likelihood that what I had published might well be the only information on the Internet about Walter White, Newark photographer who carried world credentials. Since I first came to Newark I had been nagged by the knowledge that there was, in addition to Clarence H. White, (link) another well-known photographer who once worked here and that his name was also White. Through the years I had casual discussions with others, mostly photographers, about whether Walter was related to Clarence and that sort of thing. For all those years - more than 40 of them - I never bothered to learn what Walter White had contributed to the history of photography or the history of Newark. Not until few days ago. It hit me hard and since then I've researched with the vigor I should have applied from the first. I've uncovered many of his images though most of them are reproduced here from behind glass and from newspaper reproductions. Nevertheless, I'm passing them on this way as a first step toward trying to make this collection public, hoping perhaps for a permanent display area in Newark and a photo-historian curator. Maybe that's hoping for too much, but the feelers are out as I write this in February, 2008. I'm not optimistic, but until the possibilities have been explored, I'm offering this to Internet passersby - with the expectation that I will be able to improve the quality and the scope as time permits. |
