The photos are from January 22, 1962 (my 27th birthday) to September 2, 1966, during which time I worked as the chief photographer for The (Newark Ohio) Advocate. Since then, these photos have lived in a pile of yellow Kodak 8X10 enlarging-paper boxes. If nothing else distinguishes them, they were given good treatment in hypo and wash water, for they have emerged these many years later with very few chemical stains and not much stink. The images are of some historical interest from three perspectives. One, they show visual squibs in everyday Newark/Licking & Perry County history. Two, the history of local journalism is represented, as these photos demonstrate the kind of material we presented to help sell Advocate newspapers during those years, (except the ratio of sports photos we used is vastly under-represented in this collection). Three, photo technicians may find interesting the techniques that were emerging or prevalent back then. In that regard, it may be worth mentioning that Tri-X in available light and Panatomic-X for studio floods and strobes were standard. Developer was Diafine. Accompanying comments (with apologies for a bad memory) will, I hope, expand your understanding of the content and purpose. Some of the people were not identified if, in my mind, they might not approve lo these many years later. Should you find yourself in one of these photos, or if you know about it, and you want to suggest changes to the descriptions I wrote, please contact me by e-mail. I am uncovering more of those yellow boxes as we speak, and once those are emptied I have a collection of negatives to sort through, so this could become a lifetime hobby. Or not, depending on the reaction to it, if any. Enjoy ... Bruce Humphrey |
