Al Milliken

he walked on water

Here are the faces of a couple of movers and shakers of the past.  The man on the right - Al Milliken - was the patron saint of businesses great and small. In that capacity, he influenced much of what the Advocate said about business matters (and what the newspaper's photographer took pictures of, business-wise - including the old stare-at/smile-while-looking-at-a-paper pose).

As the main cog in the local chamber of commerce, he was the magnet for new industry and for putting Newark on the map as a great place to do business. And he did it to everyone's great satisfaction, as far as I knew.

This is one of many photos I took of Al who was himself a good photographer, mostly outdoor/nature/scenic subjects. He was also the prototypical stare-at/smile-while-looking-at-a-paper poser.

This photo was lit with bounce flash, a technique I used in quarters too tight to accommodate more than one light source. Note the three-quarter-around frame of books and foreground papers and the cramming of photo elements into a very tight composition which allowed faces of the subjects to consume a goodly share of the halftone turf.
